ABOUT

DRAWN TO

LIFE

Figure drawing requires a blend of technical and expressive approaches. A successful drawing must capture both the machinery of muscle and bone as well as the poetry of emotion and spirit. Too much emphasis on anatomy alone can produce a drawing that feels mechanical. Too much emphasis on expression can miss the remarkable physical beauty of the body.

My aim is to capture both the ghost and the machine. If I do my work properly, then like a compressed spring, these figure drawings should appear to hold energy in suspension, as if they might erupt into motion at any moment.

Because the poses that interest me most are often difficult for models to hold, many of these drawings were drawn from photographs I took during extended sessions with models.

The human figure was my first drawing passion and the subject I continue to return to more than any other.
